“In Chinatown, nothing changes,” Jimmy O. Yang’s Willis Wu explains at the beginning of the Chinatown Inland trailer.
Hulu has released a trailer and key art for the upcoming limited series, which will feature Taika Waititi as the pilot director and Charles Yu as the show’s creator and showrunner. The show is based on Yu’s 2020 novel. Ronnie Cheng, Chloe Bennet, Lisa Gilroy, Sullivan Jones, Archie Kao, and Diana Lin will join Yang in the cast.
According to Hulu’s logline, the show follows Willis, a background character trapped in a police procedural called “Black and White.” The synopsis continues as follows. “Relegated to behind-the-scenes jobs and waiting turns, Willis dreams of a world beyond Chinatown and aspires to be the star of his own story.” As she begins to unravel Chinatown’s web of crime, she discovers her family’s hidden history and what it feels like to be in the spotlight.
“There’s something going on in Chinatown,” Bennett’s character says in the trailer. In the trailer, Yang and Bennett team up and work together to solve what that “something” is.
The trailer leans heavily towards mystery, but also shows off plenty of action. Willis tells viewers in a voiceover that kung fu can break out at any time, then cuts to Yang and Chen in an action-packed fight scene.
The 10-episode series is produced by 20th Television and stars Yu and Waiti as Dan Lin and Lindsey Liberatore (Rideback), Jeff Skoll (Participant), Miura Kite, Elsie Choi, and Dive. He will serve as executive producer along with Garrett Basch and John Lee.
All episodes of the limited series will be available on Hulu on November 19th. Watch the full trailer below.
