Tamouz builds multi-layer facade for Sarv office building
Tamouz Architecture & Construction Group has taken over the design of the Sarv office building in Tehran, Iran. This office project expresses the tension between contradictory concepts such as order and disorder, openness and enclosure, light and shadow through its architectural design. When first approached for façade approval in June 2017, the design team set out to construct a building with unique architectural challenges. The partially constructed building, with a 100% site area, limited the possibilities for natural light and ventilation, with the southern façade being the only source of airflow.
To overcome these limitations, the designers rejected the idea of a flat facade and instead created a layered structure that acts as both a protective shell and an interactive space between the building and its surroundings. The south side needed to balance transparency and privacy by allowing natural light into the building while protecting it from strong sunlight. The design solution included two layers. A large transparent window on the inside for maximum light and visibility, and a translucent outer layer made up of wooden handrails and steel planters. This outer transparent screen acts as a filter, regulating light and air while maintaining occupant privacy.

The space between these layers acts as a semi-open active zone, fusing functional and aesthetic elements and softening the transition between the building and the urban environment. The design team extended this concept to the rooftop, continuing the transparent and translucent theme to provide views and natural light while maintaining a sense of isolation. Internally, the principles of layering, openness, and controlled interaction with the environment are reflected in the organization of service zones, common areas, and mechanical systems. Each element of the design works in harmony to balance contrasting forces and create a cohesive structure that engages with its surroundings while addressing practical constraints.
