This week, we’re launching our beauty rulebook, ignoring advice on what not to do as we age, and railing against the mascara-free trend.
Here, HELLO!’s Beauty Collective shares their thoughts on unpopular makeup that you should probably keep to yourself…
I can’t stop wearing black eyeliner

“Last week, Matti Healy’s fiancée, It Girl Gabrielette Bechtel, slammed winged eyeliner, saying, “In high school, I followed the trend and wore winged eyeliner,” and then later criticized the look. I explained that I didn’t care anymore.
“I share Gabrielette’s taste in men, but we’re on opposite ends of the spectrum when it comes to eyeliner. I use wing liner every day and use a glossy black liquid liner to draw cat eyes.
“I’ve been told many times that black liner makes you look tired and old, but like Kate, Duchess of Cambridge, who often wears heavy liner (and has been criticized for it), I’m ditching it. “Liquid liner may not be popular with Gen Z, but for me it’s a staple of my style.” – Melanie McLeod, Hello! wellness editor
Full face makeup is still my favorite

“Since the age of pretty girls, full face makeup has become less popular, but if you ask me, it’s okay to wear full face makeup every day!”
“I love the idea of the clean girl look. A little concealer, some lip balm and I’m good to go…but as a brown girl with pigmentation, dark circles under the eyes, and breakouts, that’s just not possible. ”I feel my best self.
Sidra isn’t sold on the ‘clean girl’ trend
“This doesn’t mean I don’t believe in celebrating our natural skin, but I think it’s considered less ‘trendy’ to say you wear makeup every day to work, and I wish there wasn’t that kind of prejudice around it!
“I’m inseparable from concealer (my favorite is Hourglass’ Vanish Airbrush Concealer) and my trusty NARS Sheer Glow Foundation. I also apply blush (the new Kosas line is a dream) and lip liner and gloss, all to make me feel like I’m ready to face the day. – Sidra Imtiaz, Beauty Journalist
Shimmering eyeshadows are suitable for all ages

“As you get older, people say you should stop wearing glittery eyeshadow, but I always wear eyeshadow. I think a little bit of shimmer is very attractive and makes your eyes look really bright.” It will be gorgeous.
“However, it’s important to use the right type of glitter, and where you place it on your eyes is also important. I prefer more subtle glitters that compliment mature skin.”

“I love Studio 10’s Liquid Foil and wear it almost every day. I use it lightly during the day to brighten my eyes and make me look awake. At night, I use more for a dramatic look. I use it, but I’m careful to only use it on the lids because it’s a little too glittery for the sockets.
Glynis loves glittery eyeshadow.
“I also love Studio 10’s I-Radiance Eye Palette. This is a wearable color with a subtle shimmer. This is my go-to makeup palette for parties and red carpet events. You can go higher or lower depending on how much makeup you want. I want to go.
“I use it to create a nice grown-up smokey eye. It’s very glamorous and flattering. Life would be so boring without a little sparkle.” – Glynis Barber, Hello! wellness columnist

Mascara is a daily necessity

“While the ‘no mascara’ trend is still going strong, I swear by longer lashes to make my eyes look bigger and more vibrant.
“However, as a result of this movement, I choose less heavy formulas and leave my lower lashes natural. If you still want a little tint without clumping, try Sculpt by Amy’s new Lash I love Lift Mascara. It’s a deep brown color, so you can get natural-looking eyelashes without overdoing it. – Lydia Momen, Hello! junior beauty writer
TikTok is not the place to get beauty advice
© GettyTikTok You can’t always trust beauty hacks
“There’s no denying that I’m obsessed with internet trends, whether it’s fashion, makeup, or skincare. I’ve been a part of so many things, including Clinique’s Black Honey (a classic), strawberry makeup, and glazed donut nails.” I’ve been doing it. Whatever it is, I tried it.
“But there’s a new wave of TikTok beauty trends disguised as hacks that are going too far and are not only overwhelming us, but in some cases trying to convince us to abandon the tried and true makeup. “I think they tend to prefer new products, often unwanted products.
“A few months ago, there was a debate between silicone products and water-based products, and the argument (which was quickly debunked) was that the reason makeup doesn’t go on well is because you can’t mix the two. Contrast and low contrast makeup, to be honest, I didn’t have the energy to understand what that meant.
“Again, when it comes to skin and beauty, I’ll try almost anything, but my thoughts may not be that hot, but in an age where trends are changing daily, don’t ditch your makeup too soon. Just because TikTok says so, how we use it!” – Beatriz Colon, Hello! american writer
Concealer under eyes does not need to be refreshed

“There was a time when I always started my makeup routine by dabbing a generous amount of YSL Touché Eclat, which was the size of a doe’s foot, under my eyes.
“As you know, the drill was a triangular shaped concealer that ran from the tip of the nose to the outer corner of the eye.And now that I’m in my late 40s and have gone through menopause, I can’t help but think that there’s concealer under those generous eyes. Not only will this step remain in my routine, but it will become even more important thanks to the sleepless nights and hormonal hot sweats. But that couldn’t be further from the truth.
“Because I adopted a less-is-more attitude to my makeup routine, I ended up sacrificing the under-eye concealer step. I swapped out my eye cream instead.

“Concealer often hides in the crow’s feet and crow’s feet creases, making them look even more accentuated. Using an eye cream to keep those areas hydrated can help your eyes look cleaner and brighter. ” – Donna Francis, Hello! beauty expert
