Eighteen members of the Griswold Tuesday Music Club answered the roll call “Name the artwork that has color in the title” during an Oct. 1, 2024 meeting at Faith Lutheran Church . President Pat Burns called a business meeting by order. The reports of the secretary and treasurer were approved.
Doris Rieken shared the news of the passing of American country music singer, songwriter and actor Kris Kristofferson on Music Moment. Many of you may remember his famous hits “Me and Bobby McGee,” “Help Me Make It Through the Night,” and “Why Me Road.”
Several members talked about recent music recitals they had attended across the state. The choir practiced “Bye Bye Blackbird” led by Donna Perdue and accompanied by Doris Rieken.
Program leader Lila Hoogeveen opened the program with “The Old King,” an orange and black painting by Georges Rouault (1871-1958), a French painter and printmaker often associated with the Beast School and Expressionism. . She provided information about his various painting periods and landmark events in artists’ property rights. He was a contemporary of Henri Matisse. Rouault’s popularity skyrocketed from the 1930s to the 1950s. The performers on this day’s program used some of the music of the time. Michelle Heartfield and Linda Parker sang a duet of 1939’s “Somewhere Over the Rainbow.” Elsa Cayce performed 1932’s hauntingly beautiful “Night and Day.” Jan Highfill performed 1938’s “Begin the Begin.” The club then sang together 1939’s “God Bless America.”
The next meeting will be held on November 5th at Faith Lutheran Church. Michelle Heartfield and Jan Brown will be co-hosts, and Jan Highfill will lead the program. You will be asked to roll call the names of the books with colored titles.
