Germany is home to Europe’s largest pet population. The Federation of the European Pet Food Industry (FEDIAF) reports that there are 10.6 million pet dogs and 15.2 million cats in Germany.
According to sessions and press conferences during Interzoo 2024, Germany’s pet care market in 2023 reached an all-time high of €7 billion (US$7.55 billion). Pet food sales accounted for more than half of the total, amounting to EUR 4.495 billion (USD 4.85 billion in physical stores). Online pet care sales reached €1.316 billion (US$1.42 billion), but this figure is not broken down into product categories.
This year has seen several business moves in the German pet food industry. VAFO Group, a leading European pet food manufacturer, has completed the acquisition of the remaining shares in the German family-owned company Allco Tiernahrung. Westfleisch, Germany’s second largest meat distributor, expands its range of pet food products with the acquisition of The Petfood Company.
