Tired of airport bar prices? Travelers secretly mix their own espresso martinis with this DIY hack
Written by Gary Leff, October 27, 2024
Apparently, enjoying unpurchased cocktails at the airport has become a “travel trend.” Mix your own drink before boarding the plane. Here’s one creator’s take on making your own espresso martini at the airport: Starbucks and mixing your own booze.
Espresso martinis under $10 – mini vodka, Baileys, Kahlua, or both. This is an airport, so there are no rules. And I ordered a double shot of espresso on ice from Starbee.

Many airports offer alcoholic beverages, so you’ll find that you can drink inside the airport, even at the gate.
Also, while some airlines are happy to serve wine that you bring on board, this is not usually something that US airlines offer. However, you cannot drink your own alcohol on board.
During the pandemic, when airlines didn’t sell alcohol on board their buses, people were forced to bring their own drinks or at the terminal, even though it’s illegal to drink alcohol that wasn’t served by flight attendants. I bought drinks on the plane and brought them on board. Of course, this was also when many of us were staying at home and drinking during the day.
Now that onboard alcohol has been reinstated, that’s less of an issue. Still, the alcohol minis fit into a 100ml Ziploc Freedom baggie and are allowed through airport security along with the liquid. You can also bring your own, although this is not recommended, at least for consumption on board. You can play the game in advance in the terminal. Consider stocking up on minis on the plane as well.
As an AAdvantage Executive Platinum, I get complimentary in-flight drinks and snacks (American Airlines rarely sells snacks on the bus).
If you are traveling in a bus with extra legroom (‘Main Cabin Extra’), you will receive complimentary alcoholic beverages.
I have the AAdvantage Aviator Silver Card, which gives you a $25 daily credit toward in-flight food and beverage purchases.
When I was on a plane in the US, I found myself really hoarding mini bottles. To be honest, it’s a missed opportunity. Why don’t we bring more people on board each flight? That’s a question I should seriously ask myself.
