The Wisconsin Better Business Bureau (BBB) is urging pet owners to consider insurance for their furry friends.
LA CROSSE, Wis. (WXOW) — The Wisconsin Better Business Bureau (BBB) is reminding pet owners to consider insurance for their furry friends.
Pet insurance can cover unexpected veterinary expenses and, in some cases, regular checkups.
If you’re considering insurance for your pet, be sure to understand how the plan works before purchasing, said Lisa Schiller, WI BBB’s senior director of research and media relations.
“I want to know if the plan covers coverage for common illnesses such as cancer or genetic conditions,” Schiller said. “Some companies may offer comprehensive coverage that includes sickness, chronic conditions, accidents, and preventive care.”
She added that it’s also important to check if your insurance covers your deductible or if you’ll receive reimbursement from your insurance after paying the veterinarian.
Another factor for many people is that insurance prices and coverage can vary.
“While accident-only coverage is generally the least expensive type of pet insurance, it’s important to note that chronic disease and preventive care are not covered,” Schiller said. “Keep in mind that if you have a young, healthy pet, all you have to worry about is the cost of emergencies and not other things like cancer.”
Having a dedicated emergency fund for your pet is a good alternative to insurance.
