ALLEN COUNTY, Ohio (WLIO) – Allen County dog wardens are offering some tips on how to keep your dog safe this Halloween.
To prevent escapes and bites, we recommend keeping your pet confined somewhere in your home during trick-or-treating time.
Dog handlers point out that while costumes are fun for humans, cloaks and masks can be frightening for many animals. The risk of your pet running away due to stress is high, especially if your pet frequently opens the door at night to hand out candy. “It can upset a dog’s tummy, it can cause gastrointestinal upset, it can cause diarrhea and vomiting. And you know, dogs don’t unwrap candy, so there’s the wrapper and all that’s going on. . Sticks, popsicle sticks, not necessarily popsicles, but suckers with sticks on them. That’s not good for the intestinal tract,” explained Allen County Dog Warden Julie Shellhamer.

Shellhamer added that as temperatures drop, now is the time to ensure outdoor pets have warm, dry shelter before the first snowfall.
