This homemade Halloween treat from Virginia has become famous throughout the DMV
This is a neighborhood Halloween display that has become a cult favorite in the Washington, DC area over the past decade for its spooky atmosphere and unique attention to detail.
On today’s episode of “Matt About Town,” WTOP’s Matt Kaufax takes us through “The Nightmare of Conservation Drives.”
Neon lights, fog from smoke machines, and spooky music provide the perfect backdrop as you walk through the grounds in Springfield, Virginia, on a crisp fall night and relive iconic moments from your favorite Halloween horror movies. form the background.
Conceived by father-daughter duo Frank and Kim Smith, “Conservation Drive Nightmare” transforms hundreds from a handful of items, including animatronic displays, self-operating electronic hangouts, and even an entire choir. It has even evolved into Halloween themed decorations. Singing pumpkin!
That’s the real kicker here. Everything you see, you have to be brave enough to visit, is handmade by the Smith family. Engineers by trade, the two not only design and build each item, but also outfit and wire everything to give you the best and most unforgettable experience.

The Smiths told Matt they first started Nightmares on Conservation Drive in 2013 when Kim moved back to the area. The father-daughter pair say their initial inspiration for the decor was a shared love of spooky movies and Stephen King’s scariest novels.
At first, they created the Nightmare just for themselves, but it soon attracted the attention of neighbors and became a hit with people walking and driving around looking for the best Halloween display. I did. Fast forward to 2024, and Matt meets families who have driven all the way from rural Virginia and Maryland just to get a glimpse.
Now, Nightmare on Conservation Drive features scenes from most Halloween/horror movies that are considered iconic.
On his journey through “Nightmare,” Matt stumbles into the well from “The Silence of the Lambs,” goes to prom with “Carrie,” enters the famous hallway through the elevator door scene from “The Shining,” and almost makes a mistake in “The Silence of the Lambs.” I almost made “Beetlejuice.” ” Appear.
