Where are you dreaming of going this fall?
When Americans think of traveling abroad, where do they fantasize about going? Better yet, what can they prove when they figure out where they want to go?
When we analyze Google search data for 140 cities over the past 12 months to find the most sought-after international destinations from the United States, we learn a few things. Add in the most popular searches on GayCities itself and the puzzle is complete.
Mexico City is the most sought-after city for travel from the United States. There are 47,318 searches for travel to cities in the United States every month. Specifically, “Flight Mexico City” was the most searched term, accounting for 45,395 searches. Mexico’s capital is also the most popular search on GayCities, and articles about the city are among the most popular on the site.

Second on the list is Rome, with an average of 40,495 searches per month for travel to the Italian capital. Searches for “Flight Rome” contributed 36,239 of the average monthly searches. Rome is also in the top 5 searches for gay cities, but only in 5th place.
Madrid, the capital of Spain, follows in third place with an average of 19,728 searches per month. On average, “Madrid Airlines” accounted for 18,294 of these monthly searches. However, Barcelona ranks in the top five searches on GayCities.
In fourth place is the Canadian city of Montreal, with an average of 17,775 searches per month. The search term “Flight Montreal” accounted for the majority of these searches, with 15,609 each month. Montreal is ranked in the top 10 gay cities, but not in the top 5.
Rounding out the top five is Greece’s capital, Athens, with an average of 17,605 searches per month. Of these monthly searches, “Athens flights” accounted for 16,177. Greece is very popular with the LGBTQ+ community. Athens is in the top 10 gay cities.
Lisbon, Portugal came in sixth place in the Google search data, while Italy ended up having several cities in the top 10. Venice came 7th, Milan 8th, Florence 9th and Naples 10th.
In a recent survey, GayCities readers chose Amsterdam, Netherlands as the city they most wanted to visit. Ranked 3rd among most popular city guides.
And finally, Berlin, Germany ranks 4th on the list of most popular gay cities. Most users are looking for information about popular nightclubs and public baths in the city.
Magdalena Petrusić of Dubai Tours & Tickets said, “While search volume for international destinations may not be as high as some might expect, many Americans are still looking for domestic destinations. “I am choosing to fly to and travel to,” he said. “This is potentially due to the fact that flights to other continents can cost thousands of yen.”
