Terence Leung enjoys working out five times a week, but as a freelance theater actor and producer in Hong Kong, his day can start and end early in the morning anywhere in the city. Because of my gender, joining a regular gym was never an option. .
That’s why the 30-year-old has been a member of 24-hour gym Anytime Fitness since 2018.
“You can plan your training early in the morning to fit around your work schedule,” says Leung.
Similarly, Cindy, 29, who works in a bank and declines to give her full name, sometimes leaves work late so she can go to a 24-hour gym.
“A lot of other gyms close around 10 p.m.,” she says, which she feels is too early for the time she wants to work out.
The physical health of Hongkongers has been on the rise over the past decade, and the city’s fitness industry has grown accordingly. However, Hong Kong is a relative latecomer to the introduction of 24-hour gyms. One of the earliest 24-hour gyms in the United States opened in 1983.
