Troy Millings and Rashad Bilal launched the podcast Earn your Leisure to educate the community about financial literacy and entrepreneurship. Now they are expanding that education to high schools. On the latest episode of Financial Freestyle with Ross Mack, Millings and Bilal discuss why the curriculum they developed is important for students.
“If you think about education, financial literacy is often not taught in schools,” Bilal said. “It’s one of the most important things we need in life. Whatever you do for your career, you have to pay taxes… There’s also a retirement plan, somewhere. I have to live.”
Bilal and Millings worked with Bronx Principal Dr. Travis Brown to develop a curriculum for high school students that explores financial principles from the stock market and real estate to entrepreneurship. Last year, their pilot program began at 12 schools in the Bronx. This year, they hope to expand to more schools in New York City and then take the program nationwide.
As an educator herself, Millings had a personal motivation to share her financial knowledge with her students. “To be honest, I started to feel like I was…complicit in being a part of these kids’ futures. If they haven’t learned this and I know it, then I… “I think that’s really bad for them.” ”
“Earn Your Leisure” co-organizers hope students leave the program with enough knowledge to make informed financial decisions even after high school. “They’re making a really big decision at 18, right? To go to college or not to go to college,” Millings says. “A business decision is being made, but they may not know it until it’s too late. So we provide them with as much information, tools, and tools as possible to help them make the best decision for them. And we wanted to provide them with sufficient resources.”
