What is the reality of space travel in the near future? The rocket dream of the 20th century required a budget available only to superpowers. Times change. Small countries, private companies, and even some individuals believe the stars are within their reach. What does that imply about the future of space travel? Here’s more from the British Science Museum.
The next step will be to deploy robot manufacturers into space that can build giant structures. For example, a gigantic successor to the James Webb Space Telescope with a gigantic thread-thin mirror assembled in zero gravity. These will further enhance imaging of exoplanets and the wider universe.
With each advance in robotics and miniaturization, the realistic possibility of human spaceflight becomes weaker and weaker. Astronauts require much more “maintenance” than robots. Their activities require air, water, food, living space, and protection from harmful radiation.
