Parent-teacher conferences are just around the corner, and teachers are venting on social media one of their biggest complaints: being expected to “take care of parents.”
Reddit user GingerMonique posted on r/Teachers describing a staff meeting where educators were asked to share their fears and concerns about parent-teacher conferences. She says the most common response is, “What are the expectations of us as parents now?”
“It’s not enough that our parents have given up many of their roles for us (teaching us resilience, self-management, financial literacy, cooking and cleaning). But now we have to parent them. ” she cries.
She cites as examples parents who have never thought to take video games away from their kids, or parents who complain that Pause doesn’t work because their kids just “sleep and play Xbox.” .
The issue resonated with other teachers on the forum, many of whom wanted to offer their own parent and teacher horror stories.
Some have revealed horrifying stories about parents who don’t want to believe that their special child could deserve any consequences.
One teacher talked about her decision to call the parents of four boys on the spot who were throwing papers around the room. “The mothers were obsessed with their children and the rest of the year went perfectly…except for boy #4,” they wrote. The boy claimed the boy was laughing, grinning and even bragging about his crimes until his mother answered the phone and started crying. His mother fell for this and blamed the teacher, saying, “She doesn’t understand that I hate my son for not seeing his actions firsthand.”
Another educator told a parent whose child threw a calculator during class that “the mother’s response was that she was lying because she ‘knew’ her child was a good kid.” Sent an email.
Maybe some parents believed their child’s behavior was flawed, but didn’t understand how it was a problem.
