You can always rely on interior designer Shay McGee when it comes to creating a cozy space for the festive season, and her approach to holiday decor won us over this year.
Studio McGee posted a video on Instagram in which Sia shares her favorite fall/winter hosting tips, and it’s all about candles.
Whether you’re planning on hosting guests for Halloween or Thanksgiving, or you’re already working on Christmas decoration ideas, Shea’s approach to candle decorating will take your entertaining to the next level and make your guests feel at home. You will be amazed by the cozy atmosphere.
“When I’m hosting a holiday and want to add some holiday flair to my space, there are a few things I like to do that always work,” Sia begins the video. “And the first thing is to incorporate different types of candles.”
“That’s why I love holiday scents. I think they set the mood the moment you walk into a space,” the designer added. While many of us focus on the appeal of scented candles this time of year, it’s also worth considering the actual design of the candle itself.
For Shea, it’s about embracing a variety of designs, reflecting seasonal colors and a variety of interesting shapes when styled together in a room. “I like combining candle shapes in a space.”
Decorate with scented jar candles
Starting her plans with scented jar candles, Shea chose a dark green glass style “with really beautiful faceted edges and gold rims,” which she displayed on a woven tray on an ottoman in the center of her living room. .
Below you can shop some of our favorite scented jar candles. It’s an easy way to fill your home with a festive spirit this holiday season.

Taper candles can be used to complement jar candles, ideally adding another color to provide contrast and create a layered look.
For Shea, taper candles in a red hue with “this really beautiful twist detail” are arranged in a hurricane vase on a console table, adding an instant festive vibe with the winter color scheme.
Tapered candles also work wonderfully displayed across a festive tablescape, and you can experiment with different heights and colors side by side to add even more interest.

“I love how Hurricane works for the holidays. It feels like you bought it for the holidays, but you can use it year-round if you change out the candles.”
