The St. Mary’s County Health Department (SMCHD), in collaboration with St. Mary’s County Public Schools (SMCPS), commemorated Red Ribbon Week, a national event promoting drug-free lifestyles among students. This year’s campaign will run from October 23rd to 31st and is about encouraging young people to live drug-free lives while adopting a healthy lifestyle.
Red Ribbon Week, sponsored by the National Family Partnership, is the largest and oldest drug prevention program in the United States. Each year, this campaign reaches millions of students across the country, raising awareness of the importance of not using drugs and empowering young people to make safe and healthy choices. This annual event is hosted by schools, communities and organizations across the country and features a variety of activities and educational events to promote drug prevention.
This year’s theme, “Life is a Movie, a Drug-Free Movie,” encourages students, educators, health care professionals, parents, and the community at large to do their part to foster a drug-free environment. . This theme aims to show young people that their choices, including living drug-free, are essential to building a bright and healthy future.
The partnership between SMCHD and SMCPS allows both organizations to engage students through educational activities that promote healthy lifestyles. These initiatives aim to provide students with the tools and resources they need to make informed decisions about drugs, while also providing opportunities to participate in activities that reinforce the benefits of being drug-free. SMCHD Behavioral Health Director Tammy Loewe expressed her gratitude for the collaboration with public schools. “We are grateful for our partnership with SMCPS in spreading the message of Red Ribbon Week to our students each year,” Loewe said. “Living drug-free allows our young people to become their best selves.”
This partnership with local schools emphasizes the importance of a united community effort in substance abuse prevention. SMCPS Director of Safety and Security Charles Eible emphasized the importance of working together to make a lasting impact on students. “By partnering with the health department, we can strengthen our community’s efforts to promote a drug-free lifestyle,” Able said. “By working together, we can provide students with the education and resources they need to make healthy choices and live drug-free lives.”
Activities planned for Red Ribbon Week will take place within St. Mary’s Parish schools and provide students with an engaging and educational way to learn about the benefits of being drug-free. The program aims to help students make positive decisions by focusing on their health and well-being and fostering an environment where they feel empowered to live drug-free lives.
The involvement of both health departments and public schools highlights a comprehensive approach to addressing drug prevention in the community. By providing educational materials and facilitating discussions about substance abuse prevention, this partnership ensures that students receive the information and support they need to thrive. The program also aims to extend its impact beyond the classroom and encourage parents to discuss drug prevention at home.
Community members are encouraged to visit SMCHD’s website at smchd.org/prevention for additional resources on drug prevention and recovery. This site provides valuable information to help families, educators, and health care providers address substance abuse prevention and recovery in their communities.
Red Ribbon Week serves as an important reminder of the power of collective action to prevent substance abuse and promote healthy lifestyles among youth. By working together, organizations like SMCHD and SMCPS want to foster safer and healthier communities for all residents.
