A Missouri animal welfare organization has helped a North Carolina animal shelter damaged by Hurricane Helen. The North Carolina shelter had no electricity or running water, so they were unable to care for their pets.
Sara Javier, president and CEO of the Missouri Humane Society, has adopted 13 pets, including cats and dogs, from the St. Louis County shelter, some of which are already up for adoption. He said that it has been done.
“As you can imagine, they had a pretty traumatic experience with the flooding and were a little shaken up, but overall they were in really great shape,” she told Missourinet.
Javier said the pets are up for adoption in North Carolina.
“I think it was during Hurricane Katrina that animal welfare departments learned a lot about how to care for and move animals during disasters. We want to make sure that the animals we adopt at APA don’t have owners,” she said.
She said animal shelters in North Carolina are moving adopted pets out of state to care for pets separated from their owners in the aftermath of the hurricane.
“Of course, we prioritize animals in the St. Louis area,” she said. “However, we always make sure we have space to help during disasters like this whenever possible. So while the number of pets we adopt is not that high, every shelter can do their bit.” Collectively, we can make a huge difference.”
