The Sierra received a little snow Monday afternoon and more snow is expected later this week. On-and-off snow is expected to affect travel in the mountains from Wednesday night through at least Thursday. The KCRA 3 weather team is calling Thursday a weather impact day. Snow will start falling Wednesday night. Donner Summit could see 3 to 5 inches of snow Wednesday night into Thursday evening. Echo Summit on Highway 50 could see 1 to 3 inches of snow. Although accumulations are relatively small, chain restrictions may be required from time to time on Interstate 80 and Highway 50. During that period, there may be dry periods during which chain restrictions are lifted. Drivers are required to carry chains throughout the fall and winter. It’s a good idea to practice installing the chain before you hit the highway. Snow levels are expected to remain around 6,000 feet, but could briefly drop to 5,500 feet by Thursday afternoon. Further light snow is expected in higher elevations Friday into Saturday. The current amount appears to be less than what is expected on Thursday.
