Dark paint colors are taking center stage this year. From dark forest green to deepest blue. From rich burgundy to luxurious chocolate brown, moody paint colors are much-loved and we expect their popularity to continue into 2025.
As a color editor at H&G, I’ve seen so many dark paint colors used across interior projects, but one that recently caught my attention was Sherwin-Williams’ October Color of the Month, It’s Mount Etna. Described as an “ashy blue” with green and gray as its main tones, it is a perfectly balanced blue that exudes calm and sophistication.
If, like me, you love the dark paint trend and are looking for a stylish shade to complete your fall color scheme, read this article to find out why I think this color is the perfect moody color for the cozy season. Find out what color you think it is.
Both dark blue and dark green paint are popular this year, and Sherwin-Williams’ Mount Etna seems to combine both of these color trends. I’m a big fan of these “in-between” shades that don’t clearly fall into one group or the other. For example, dark blue paint can look outdated if it falls too much into the navy blue category, a trend that gained a lot of attention a few years ago. On the other hand, dark green can dominate a room with very warm tones.
Mount Etna, Sherwin Williams
Offering a combination of blue, green and gray, this paint color is a fresh alternative to the classic navy blue and adds interest to your interior scheme.
Etna, on the other hand, has incredibly livable qualities, and I would argue that it creates a more timeless finish than classic dark blue or dark green. It features a unique blend of undertones and cannot be defined as a single color, making it less likely to be outdated or too trend-driven.
Another reason I love this paint color is that it boasts a natural quality. Blues, greens, and grays evoke images of the natural world, and the subtlety of each hue gives a sense of calm and peace.
Dark paint colors like Etna can be difficult to decorate with, especially if you’re used to decorating with neutrals, but there are many ways to successfully incorporate this hue. Sherwin-Williams recommends using it as an accent color on cabinets, fireplaces, etc. for a rich pop of color.

When using this color as an accent, it is important to pair it with the appropriate paint color. The most complementary is Extra White, a classic fresh white paint for a timeless look, according to Sherwin-Williams. Natural Choice, a creamy off-white color for an organic, relaxed look. And Edgy Gold is a dark, rich yellow that delivers a colorful scheme.
Alternatively, we imagine this paint shade to be used for the idea of soaking in color, which is currently one of the trendiest ways to embrace dark hues. Particularly suitable for small rooms like bedrooms, home offices, and even laundry rooms, incorporate this color everywhere from ceilings to woodwork to doors for a completely cohesive look. Complete your look with cozy textiles and you’ll be ready for winter in no time.
If you want to embrace the trend of decorating with dark paint colors while keeping your overall look timeless, a color like Mount Etna is a solid choice. Add interest with its blend of undertones and offer a calming quality with its natural-world feel, use this color in your cozy and stylish spaces this fall.
