HOOVER, Ala. (WBRC) – Many people in Florida have decided to evacuate ahead of Hurricane Milton, and some are seeking shelter in Alabama.
WBRC spoke with Diane Booth, who traveled from Lakeland, Florida, between Tampa and Orlando.
She said the past few days had been difficult, but she chose to evacuate on Monday because she didn’t want to take any chances.
Booth said traffic coming out of Florida was congested and many gas stations on the way back ran out of fuel.
She said it took seven hours to reach Georgia, where she had been seeking shelter, but many places and rest areas were at capacity.
But while she’s grateful to have found shelter at Hoover RV Park, she’s worried about what she’ll find when she gets home.
“I think everyone will come together, but I want them to know that when we come back, the building is still there and standing for us,” Booth said. .
Booth and his family plan to leave on Friday, but that depends on what happens with Milton over the next few days.
