SCHULKILL TWP., Pa. (WPVI) — Police in a Pennsylvania township have recommended installing GPS tracking devices on political signs after receiving multiple theft reports.
“It really started to happen throughout town, for both parties as well,” said Schuylkill Township Police Sgt. Brian McCarthy.
The town began receiving reports of dozens of signs about three weeks ago. Several towns are now putting up signs asking people not to steal political signs.
Mary Alice Greto had already had about 30 signs intended for Republican candidates stolen.
“This is ridiculous,” Gret said. “Every time it’s been installed, it’s been removed.”
Police are now recommending that signs be equipped with GPS trackers to make them easier to find if they are removed.
Gene Roe started installing air tags on some of the Democratic candidate’s billboards after they started disappearing. He even managed to recover some.
“They were removed and the police were very accommodating in recovering the signs and my air tag,” Lo said.
Police said stealing a sign is a misdemeanor and there are better ways to show support for a candidate.
“Take that passion to the polls. Vote for your candidate and let the people decide who will be president,” said Sgt. McCarthy.
