Eva Mendes talks about parenting
Eva Mendes has opened up about her struggles as a parent due to the way she was raised.
“I think one of the most difficult patterns for me is screaming, because I don’t yell when they need me,” said the 10-year-old, with longtime partner Ryan Gosling. The Hitch actress, who is also the mother of Esmeralda and 8-year-old Amada, spoke on the Oct. 15 episode of “Parenting & You With Dr.” Shefali.
“I’m never a ‘shut up’ guy. It’s not a ‘mean’ scream, but it’s fine. I scream. And it’s this cry that I think is so cultural. ”
“I’m having a hard time getting through without shouting,” the 50-year-old continued. “Hurrying and yelling are the hardest things for me.”
Eva, the daughter of Cuban parents Eva Perez Suárez and Juan Carlos Mendez, said the one thing she didn’t want to do was “be raised in fear.” This is what I faced as a child, even though I had a “nice” family.
“I hope I don’t look back in 20 years and say, ‘Oh, I’m going to shoot,’ but I don’t want to let fear get me excited,” Eva said through tears.
“That’s the problem. I’m sorry I got emotional. Because it’s so unfair to the kids. Fear puts pressure on them unknowingly, like I was raised with.” I hope you haven’t given it to me.
The Ghost Rider star further talked about becoming more like her mother over time, but she didn’t want that.
“When I was in my 20s, I definitely thought, ‘I’m not going to be like my parents,’ and that was it,” she admitted. “And I’m shocked at how much I look like my mother. I love her. She’s ruined…but yeah, my home when I was little. It was very chaotic, there was a lot of screaming, a lot of anxiety, a lot of confusion, even though I had a loving family.”
