I would describe myself as “hard to impress” when it comes to beauty products. Sometimes I find a favorite hair product that I can incorporate into my routine. Also, every few months a new makeup product may appear on my vanity table. So what about skin care products? Good luck. I have dry, acne-prone skin, so I rarely add anything new to my rotation unless it’s essentially life-changing.
The truth is, with skin like mine, a lot of things can go wrong, and they can go wrong quickly. Your face may become riddled with acne overnight, you may develop dermatitis that doesn’t heal for weeks, or you may develop a severe rash that covers your body with red spots. Even when it comes to brands created by my favorite celebrities, I’m still overly cautious, even though I still wax poetic about my favorite celebrity, Hailey Bieber.
But when I heard the news about Road Barrier Butter ($38), my interest piqued.

About road barrier butter
This product is a moisturizing balm that helps lock in moisture. Available in two sizes: 5 oz and 1.35 oz. Key ingredients include a hydrating hyaluronic acid complex, polyglutamic acid and murumuru butter to lock in moisture, and ceramides to strengthen the skin barrier. Cruelty-free, gluten-free, non-comedogenic, fragrance-free, and vegan.
What I like about Road Barrier Butter
As someone with dry, acne-prone skin, this brand’s barrier butter has been a lifesaver ever since I got it. My skin starts to peel in the winter, so I always use Occlusive to lock in moisture. This product does that, but it doesn’t leave your face feeling sticky or like there’s a layer of gross residue on the surface. Additionally, I never had any problems with breakouts, rashes, or dermatitis.
It incorporates perfectly into my night routine. I layer it on super dry areas or apply it all over if I’m feeling flaky. I also love using this product before makeup. My skin looks very shiny and no pilling forms under the product. In fact, it feels like it has the opposite effect. It helps the makeup adhere to the face.
When you’re having a no-makeup day, this product is perfect for giving you that glow-from-within glow that even strangers will comment on. (OK, it used to be in line at Trader Joe’s, but still, it counts.)
How to use road barrier butter
The brand recommends incorporating barrier butter into your nighttime routine as it is a hydrating product. She recommends starting with a cleanser, using a serum, and then adding a layer of barrier butter. If you wear it during the day, we recommend using SPF.
I have extremely dry skin, so I love moisturizing products. However, I am also prone to acne. This product hasn’t given me any breakouts, but I only use it all over my face when it’s really dry or when I really need some hydration, like when I’m slugging. Otherwise, I usually use a lighter daily moisturizer and then apply a barrier butter where I would normally use a sealant such as Aquaphor. Typically around the nose and under the eyes.
If I know I’ll be wearing makeup for hours at a time, I usually start with this brand’s Peptide Glazing Fluid and then layer it with a barrier butter. This will give you glass skin. This is the perfect base for foundation.
Things to consider before trying Road Barrier Butter
This product is thick, so if your skin type is oily, you may want to use something lighter, such as the same brand’s Barrier Restore Cream, as your daily moisturizer.
Where can I get Road Barrier Butter?
Road Barrier Butter is available directly from the brand’s website.
