Renting can be a minefield at the best of times, but throw a pet or two into the mix and it can get even more difficult.
But finding a pet-friendly property isn’t as difficult as you might think, according to new research from HireAHelper. In fact, nearly three-quarters (73.2%) of rental properties in the United States allow small dogs, large dogs, or cats.
But which cities and states are best for pet parents to rent in? This study also looks at this, so let’s take a closer look.
The most pet-friendly state is Colorado, with a whopping 86.3% of listings being pet-friendly. This was followed by Minnesota (84.8%) and North Carolina (83.2%). In contrast, Hawaii is not a pet-friendly country, with only one-third (33.2%) of properties being pet-friendly. It ranks last in the rankings by a slight margin, followed by Rhode Island (49.3%). Next is Alaska, where 50.2% of listings allow pets.
But what if you prefer city living and want to know that the particular city you’re moving to welcomes pets?Austin is the most pet-friendly city. Texas cities love their furry friends, and 93.3% of properties allow pets. And while Texas may not be among the three most pet-friendly states overall, Texas cities round out the top three pet-friendly cities with Plano (93.2%) and Dallas (92.7%). occupied.
When it comes to the least pet-friendly cities, they seem to tend to be near the coast. 11 of the 15 least pet-friendly cities are located near a body of water, and 5 of those cities are in California. Perhaps unsurprisingly, Honolulu, Hawaii is not the most pet-friendly city for renters, with only 19.8% of properties allowing pets. Meanwhile, Bakersfield, Calif. (39.5%) and Fresno, Calif. (44.7%) come next.
Interestingly, the most dog-friendly and cat-friendly states can be different. Colorado has the highest percentage of dog-friendly listings at 85.4%, while cat-friendly rankings push Minnesota to second place in the pet-friendly rankings with 82.7% of listings. North Carolina and Texas are the top three dog-friendly states, while Washington follows Minnesota and Colorado in the cat-friendly rankings.
