DAYTON, Ohio (WDTN) – More than a dozen cats were rescued from a house fire on Joyce Drive in Miami Township earlier this month.
The cats were taken to the Humane Society of Greater Dayton for care. The Humane Society works with homeowners to help them take the next steps toward recovery.
2 NEWS spoke to pet owners to find out how they have overcome the challenges of caring for themselves and their pets after the fire.

It will be a long road to rebuilding, but with the support of the community, the homeowner says he, his wife and their cats will be able to make a full recovery.
George Johnson said 14 cats were recovered from the fire. Five people are still missing.
“Getting a place for the cats. That was a challenge,” Johnson said.
His wife is working to find homes for the cats. In the meantime, the Humane Society is doing its best to support the family.
Despite the challenges, Johnson said she remains faithful to the service she has done over the years. Outside Moraine City First Church of God, he serves and gives love to others despite his own family’s tragedy.
“I’m going to go out and share God’s word and give God’s love to these people. And I’m not going to give up either. This was the Thursday it burned, I wasn’t outside…but that Friday I was on the street. “I was there,” Johnson said.

Instead, he says he and his wife have seen the community support them.
“There’s an incredible amount of love being showered on me right now, and I’m so grateful,” Johnson said.
Construction workers told the Johnsons it could take up to nine months to fully rebuild their home. In the meantime, they are looking for a camper van to use as a temporary living space for themselves and their cats.
