PS Portal sales remain strong a year after the remote player’s launch, surprising critics and naysayers. Handhelds remain the best-selling accessory in the U.S. in 2024, according to data shared by Circana’s Mat Piscatella.
PS Portal was designed to target a niche market, and its sales surprised Sony.
One of the biggest criticisms of PS Portal is that it has limited functionality considering its price. Critics seemed convinced that the game was designed for a small group of players, and expressed doubts about whether it would ever catch on.
Sony itself admitted that PS Portal was designed to target a small group of consumers who want to play games on their PS5 without sitting in front of a TV screen. The company was surprised by the demand and has since vowed to keep it in stock.
According to Piscatella, the midnight black PS5 DualSense controller was the best-selling accessory in August 2024 in the U.S., and PS Portal remains the best-selling accessory in 2024 to date. In terms of hardware, PS5 continues to lead in the country, followed by Xbox Series consoles. The Nintendo Switch, which is nearing the end of its life cycle, saw the steepest decline in sales.
