As Hurricane Milton hits Florida, residents are not only worried about their own safety, but the safety of their beloved pets.
During stressful events such as natural disasters, pets can provide great emotional support and comfort to their owners, helping to reduce anxiety and fear. Research shows that interacting with pets lowers cortisol levels, lowers blood pressure, and increases oxytocin, the “feel-good” hormone. This physiological response is especially beneficial in high-stress situations, such as evacuations and evacuations during hurricanes.
Many Tampa Bay residents evacuated with their pets before Hurricane Milton, but some rescuers are fostering pets to provide shelter from the storm.
Pets provide comfort, but it’s important to prioritize their safety during inclement weather. The Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services has issued the following guidelines for pet owners in the path of Hurricane Milton.
Secure Identification: Make sure your pet is wearing a collar with up-to-date contact information. A microchip is also recommended. Prepare an emergency kit. Include food, water, medications, medical records, and comfort items for your pet. Evacuation planning: Identify pet-friendly shelters and hotels in advance. Many emergency shelters are now accepting pets. Don’t leave your pet behind. Anything that isn’t safe for you isn’t safe for your pet.
In response to Hurricane Milton, the state of Florida worked with the Florida Restaurant and Lodging Association to waive pet policies at many hotels in the state. This initiative will allow evacuees to take their pets to safety without additional stress or financial burden.
Beyond the immediate crisis, the bond between humans and pets can play an important role in recovery and healing after a disaster. Research shows that owning a pet reduces symptoms of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and depression in disaster survivors.
As Hurricane Milton approaches, Floridians are relying on their pets for safety, while the comfort and companionship these animals provide will be invaluable in weathering the storm, both literally and emotionally. I am reminded that it can be a valuable resource.
