DELMARVA – Many people suffer from seasonal allergies, but your furry friend can be affected too.
Experts say allergy symptoms in pets are different than in humans, so you may not know what to look for. Dr Marianne Bailey from Queenstown Veterinary Hospital says dogs suffering from allergies may lick their paws frequently or scratch excessively. Cats may groom themselves excessively or develop large scabs or hairless areas.
“The big problems you see are things like reoccurring problems, like dogs coming in frequently with ear infections, or dogs coming in frequently because they’re licking their paws, or their paws really If you notice that your pet is red and swollen and that pattern is occurring, which is more than once or twice, that’s when you need to discuss it with your veterinarian.
Experts say there are several at-home treatments, including cold water baths and oatmeal shampoo. But sometimes your furry companion may need something more powerful.
“Claritin, Zyrtec, and Benadryl have pet-safe doses that you can try on your dog, but the doses are based on your dog’s weight, so be sure to check your dog’s weight before giving these drugs. It’s important to check with your doctor. If you have an infection or stronger allergy medications, you may need a prescription, such as antibiotics.”
If you are unsure whether your pet is suffering from allergies, it never hurts to consult your veterinarian.
