LAHORE, PAKISTAN, October 15, 2024 (GLOBE NEWS WIRE) — Pakistan alumni of Oxford University have been criticized for their political interests following the ‘National Dialogue on Pakistan’s Perpetual Crisis’ event held at Government House, Lahore yesterday. announced its opposition to the use of the Oxford name.
The Oxford Alumni Community of Pakistan is conducting the National Dialogue on Pakistan’s Permanent Crisis, an initiative that has so far been held in Peshawar, Quetta and Lahore. These dialogues engaged a diverse group of participants from across Pakistan, including members of political parties, parliamentarians, academia, civil society, the military, journalists, the judiciary, bureaucrats, religious leaders, youth, and the business community.
The participation of representatives from all political parties underscores our commitment to ensuring that the debate remains focused on national issues rather than partisan politics. The National Dialogue focuses on solutions to the pressing problems facing the nation, and we remain strategically passive on political issues.
Regarding related media coverage, we, as a forum, categorically deny any claims suggesting that we support or oppose any particular candidate in the Prime Minister’s election. We have not issued a statement endorsing any candidate. We emphasize that the statements being circulated in the media do not represent our collective voice and that no such public support or opposition has been made regarding any candidate.
We believe that the University of Oxford has a centuries-old tradition of excellence and that it has established systems in place to fairly administer presidential elections in accordance with its rules and regulations.
The Oxford alumni community in Pakistan is made up of individuals from a variety of backgrounds and political ideologies. The decision to vote in the Chancellor’s election is a matter for Oxford’s current students, registered and eligible alumni and faculty and staff, and is beyond the scope of the National Dialogue Team and its mission.
As proud alumni of this esteemed university, we believe that universities continue to be places where intellectual rigor and values thrive, and we want to inject that into Pakistan. We are confident that the University of Oxford will manage its Presidential election process with impartiality, independence and integrity, and in accordance with its Guiding Principles.
