JACKSONVILLE, N.C. (WITN) – Onslow County Animal Services says the number of animals in its shelter is increasing.
When people enter an animal shelter, they hear dogs barking and cats meowing as they wait to find their forever homes. Animal protection officials say 57 dogs and 42 cats have entered the shelter since last week. But between Saturday and Tuesday, 21 dogs arrived at the shelter.
“We have a dog that we’ve had for about two to three months,” Onslow County Animal Services Manager Tyler Moore said. “It’s sad to see those dogs just walking around begging for someone to take them.”
The shelter just held a “Clear the Shelters” event in September to get as many pets adopted as possible. Some Onslow County residents are ready to take the next step.
I feel like if I left without picking her up, the house would just be quiet and I would lose some of the noise of a house with cats running around,” said Jacksonville resident Dion White. .
White already has a cat, and a friend found the kitten under her car a few weeks ago. White took her home for a short time and decided to officially adopt her on Tuesday. He said something caught his eye.
“She’s young,” White said. “I’ve never had a kitten before, so my favorite thing is watching the kittens turn into cats and watch them grow.”
But Tuesday wasn’t just about adoptions, it was also about reunions. Luann Newbold said her dog dug a hole in the ground and then came outside. She says a weight was lifted off her shoulders when she found out her dog was in the shelter.
“I’m relieved, and I’m so grateful that they’re taking care of me,” Newbold said. “I’m ready to meet them and take them home.”
There is a 3-3-3 rule for adoption: it takes three days for the animal to calm down, three weeks to get used to a routine, and three months to get used to your home.
