NORTHPORT, Ala. (WBRC) – A Northport woman says someone was caught on camera stealing a political sign from her yard.
Northport homeowner Tamaria Madison said she found a note left on one of two signs in her front yard on Sept. 29.
Madison said the memo was political in nature and drew comparisons between the two presidential candidates.
“I deleted the note, but I didn’t think anything of it,” Madison said.
On Oct. 6, Madison said she encountered another situation in her front yard. This one is much more brazen.
“Two of the signs that were in the yard were taken and we noticed it about one that afternoon. Everyone has a wide variety of beliefs here, and everyone is aware of each other’s beliefs. Out of respect for that, I went back to Democratic Party headquarters and put up some more signs,” Madison said.
At that point, Madison decided to place a new political sign near her home, knowing that her doorbell camera would catch anyone trying to take a photo of the sign. Sure enough, it happened again and was caught on camera in broad daylight four days later.
“Three signs were removed. The person had his head and face covered, but he was fast, had good form, and was able to strategically run through the yard and pass all three,” Madison said. said.
Then, things took a turn. A confession, an apology, and the three stolen autographs were returned. The suspect was identified as a juvenile. His mother found out about the theft on social media and brought her son to meet Tamaria Madison over the weekend.
“He was apologetic, but I’m a forgiving person, you know what I mean. Even if he didn’t mean it, he didn’t show anything, but this “I hope you learned something from the experience and your few minutes of fame on social media,” Madison said.
Madison said the boy confessed to stealing the three signs, but claimed he had nothing to do with the note or the theft of the first two signs, which remains a mystery to Tamaria Madison. .
“I didn’t know if it was because of the weather,” she says.
All is forgiven for now, but Tamaria Madison has put three of her five signs back in her yard and has her doorbell camera running.
Madison said the boy never said why he stole the sign.
Northport police have said they have no reports of political signs being stolen on a regular basis and that if Madison decides not to press charges, they will drop the case, which Madison said she intends to do. are.
