New Orleans Mayor LaToya Cantrell is heading to Mexico City, Mexico, to attend the Bloomberg Summit, which brings together city leaders from around the world, the Cantrell administration announced in a statement Sunday.
Bloomberg CityLab 2024 brings together more than 500 mayors and policymakers to explore solutions to the political, technological and environmental challenges facing cities around the world.
“Themes will include climate resilience, infrastructure, and urban innovation, consistent with Mayor Cantrell’s commitment to building a more sustainable and economically prosperous New Orleans,” the statement said.
Cantrell was scheduled to leave for Mexico City on Sunday, but it’s unclear when he will return. No other details about the mayor’s visit were disclosed.
Cantrell has traveled internationally several times during her tenure, and her travel schedule and habits have come under increased scrutiny over the past two years.
The controversy exploded in 2022, when Cantrell was found to have improperly charged taxpayers for aircraft upgrades and was required to reimburse the city nearly $30,000. Cantrell canceled trips to Singapore and Argentina amid the unrest, but continued to make several international trips in the following months.
