Dawn is an upcoming new mobile app that aims to make the college campus fitness environment more accessible, sociable, and vibrant for young women.
“No more cluttering your mind wondering what machines are in the gym, what kind of workouts to do, who can be your gym buddies, etc. Join Dawn today. Together we can become strong women. Become,” says the app’s motto.
Dawn founder and Wake Forest University graduate Virginia Wooten said she came up with the idea for the app after starting Athenas, an all-female weightlifting club in Wake Forest. In just two years, she said, 12 percent of Wake Forest’s student population has been involved in some way with the organization.
She said she was inspired to take the idea of an all-female weightlifting club and run with it after receiving a lot of positive feedback from members inside and outside the club.
She presented the concept to the university’s Entrepreneurship Center and won a grant for the idea, as well as outside assistance to help realize her vision, she said.
“Dawn is a fitness app for women on college campuses. Our goal is to help women interested in fitness find their community in the gym and beyond,” the app says. Masu.
The app provides detailed descriptions of the equipment available at the University Fitness Center, as well as videos that explain how to use the various equipment. Wooten said the main purpose of the feature is to give young women the confidence to try new machines and workouts in a safe way.
On September 23, the app was unveiled at UNC.
Taylor Romeo, a UNC sophomore studying business and environmental science, said it would be extremely beneficial to have an app that would inform people, especially young women, about the amenities available at various facilities.
