A playoff driver and his wife collected food for dogs and cats in the aftermath of the historic storm.
CHARLOTTE, N.C. — In the aftermath of Hurricane Helen, NASCAR star driver Daniel Suarez wanted to make sure everyone, especially those with four legs, got the help they needed.
Suarez and his wife, Julia, helped collect dog and cat food and deliver it from Charlotte Motor Speedway.
“I’m a huge animal lover. I love all kinds of animals,” Suarez said. “I have a dog and a cat at home, and I wanted to make sure I didn’t forget about all the animals that are there.”
Don’t forget to help cats and dogs too 🙏🏼 Deliver pet food to @CLTMotorSpdwy today. Dog and cat supplies are also welcome! 🐶🐱 pic.twitter.com/3W6wOLwYjo

Ahead of Sunday’s Bank of America Roval at WCNC Charlotte, Suarez spoke with athletic director Nick Carboni about a variety of topics, including becoming a U.S. citizen this summer.
“It’s been an amazing journey,” he said. “That’s very special. It would have seemed impossible 10 years ago. To be able to say that I’m a dual American and Mexican citizen today is very special.”
Suarez is also excited about the NASCAR Cup Series playoff race in Mexico City next year.
“It’s a dream,” Suarez said. “Every day I have dreamed of one day racing in front of my country.”
This weekend, Suarez will be in the race to stay in the Cup Series playoffs. He is currently on the bubble, 20 points shy of qualifying for the Round of 8.
“We know that we can run very well in the ROVAL. We know that we have the ability to win races. At the end of the day, we have to decide whether we want to go for the win or the points. Realistically it’s 20 points. ”On a road course, that’s not as achievable. We’ll see what happens.”
