As Lakeland recovers from Hurricane Milton, many announcements are being made about storm-related services and facilities that are open or still closed. Here’s a roundup of recent news:
Sandbags: Due to continued flooding, the City of Lakeland is providing sandbags at 315 N. Eastside Drive, southwest of the intersection of Memorial Boulevard and Combee Road. The self-service site will be open on a first-come, first-served basis from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., while supplies last.
Solid Waste: The City of Lakeland’s regular schedule has resumed. Hurricane Milton debris is being picked up by both city trucks and FEMA contractors. Missing pets: Polk County Animal Control is searching for the owners of 44 dogs and 32 cats separated from their owners during Hurricane Milton. Only two had microchips. They are asking people whose pets are missing to visit their office at 7115 De Castro Road in Winter Haven during business hours to view photos of all missing animals.
Parks: Many of Lakeland City and Polk County’s parks reopened this week, but a significant number of large recreation areas remain closed as cleaning progresses. Some of the facilities that have not yet reopened include Circle B Bar Preserve, Gator Creek Preserve, Lakeland Highland Scrub, Holloway Park, Dog Leg Woods and Southwest Complex. Bonnet Springs Park: The park remains closed indefinitely. We are looking for volunteers to help clean up from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. throughout the weekend. learn more. Two nonprofit organizations with facilities in the park, the Children’s Museum of Florida and the Carol Jenkins Burnett United Way Children’s Resource Center, also remain closed. The museum offers activities at satellite locations.

Food and water distribution by Polk County Emergency Services is nearing an end now that power is mostly restored and stores have reopened. The last remaining site at Walker Road Park in Lakeland will close today. The Junior League of Greater Lakeland will be handing out cases of water and ready-to-eat meals at its building at 90 Lake Morton Drive from 1 p.m. Thursday until supplies last.
Polk Parkway: Tolls remain suspended even though tolls have been reinstated on many Florida toll roads.
The Orange Cup Regatta scheduled to be held at Lake Hollingsworth this weekend has been cancelled. The next one is scheduled for October 18-19, 2025.
Campbell Road: Emergency repairs to the Polk County Sewer Lift Station on West Campbell Road will result in road closures for up to two weeks.
English Creek flooded several homes on Medulla Road. This is the first time his home has flooded, a man who has lived there for 52 years told ABC Action News.
All Aboard Learning Station day care center between Kathleen Road and Bonnet Springs Park is temporarily closed after its roof was ripped off during Hurricane Milton, News Channel 8 reports. .
