MILFORD, Ohio (WXIX) – A Milford couple is warning pet owners after discovering magnets in their dog food.
Felicia Dowers and Natalie Gilbert say they regularly buy tubes of FreshPet chicken recipes.
“I get it every week and I mash it up and chop it up before I put it in the bowl,” Dowers said. “Thank God I chopped it up.”
If your dog ingests one magnet, it’s okay, according to a case report in the Journal of the American Animal Hospital Association. But when you combine two magnets, or a magnet and a piece of metal, problems can arise.
If your dog Archie swallows a magnet and a piece of metal, the two will attack another part of his digestive tract and pick it off. This can cause vomiting, digestive problems, and tissue damage.
“That would have been an expensive veterinary bill, or he might not have even survived,” Gilbert said.
Dowers said she contacted Fresh Pet. She sent them a photo but didn’t hear back for several days. In response, the company issued a free $8 coupon for every roll of dog food.
She said she tried to ask how the magnets got into the food but couldn’t get an answer.
FOX19 NOW reached out to Fresh Pet with the same question, but did not receive a response by the time this article was published.
“Our dogs are our babies,” Dowers said. “So if you ever get a fresh pet, be sure to chop it up and check it before giving it to your pet.”
