Boston’s Sumner Tunnel is officially open to traffic, MassDOT announced Monday, with all major construction substantially completed ahead of schedule, eliminating the need for a weekend closure.
High Occupancy Vehicle (HOV) lanes on I-93 between Boston and Quincy will be open during regular morning hours (5 a.m. to 10 a.m.) on Friday, October 11, but the HOV lanes will be extended. Masu. Friday, October 11th from 1pm to 7pm. HOV lanes will be closed on Monday, October 14th.
Additional “swing lanes” in the Route 1A southbound Sumner Tunnel will operate from 5 a.m. to 10 a.m. during regular hours on Friday, Oct. 11. This lane will not be rolled out on Monday, October 14th.
MassDOT’s Highway Assistance Program, sponsored by MAPFRE, increases patrols on all major roadways to support roadside assistance needs. Requests for assistance can be initiated by calling 911.
Those traveling on the MBTA should check the schedule at mbta.com/holidays. On Monday, Oct. 14, MBTA subways, buses, and The Ride will operate on a Saturday schedule, while commuter rail and ferry service will operate on a weekday schedule. Passengers should also note that the Charlie Card Store will be closing on Monday, October 14th. Additionally, MBTA Commuter Rail is pleased to extend the use of this weekend’s special weekend discount passes until Monday, October 14th. Purchase an unlimited travel pass for $10 and use this pass on Saturday, Sunday, and Monday.
MBTA suspends Orange Line service between Forest Hills and Back Bay from October 8 to October 20, and suspends service between Forest Hills and North Station from October 12 to October 14. Passengers are being reminded that this will be extended. The free, accessible shuttle stops between Forest Hills and Back Bay, as well as at Copley on the Green Line. Please note that there is no shuttle bus service between Back Bay and North Station. If you’re traveling through the downtown area, we recommend using the parallel Green Line service between North Station and Copley. The MBTA will increase Green Line service during this period to accommodate the expected increase in ridership. You may also want to consider the commuter rail, which runs free between Forest Hills, Ruggles, Back Bay, and South Station.
The public is also advised that Massachusetts offices, including motor vehicle registration customer service locations, will be closed on Monday, October 14th for a designated state holiday. Visit RMV online anytime and skip the line. More than 60 transactions: mass.gov/RMV. Meanwhile, AAA members may visit AAA locations by appointment for some registry transactions.
Massport expects passenger traffic at Boston Logan International Airport to increase over the holiday weekend and suggests travelers allow extra time to arrive at Logan and pass through security. Massport continues to recommend travelers arrive two hours early for domestic flights and three hours early for international flights. As always, Massport encourages the use of public transportation and HOV modes such as the MBTA’s Blue and Silver Lines (free from Logan) and the Logan Express.
Massport is encouraging passengers to download the FlyLogan app to access airport information and flight status, purchase Logan Express tickets, and order benefits such as pickup within Logan.
