Matt McKay, Parsons Interior Design ’12, creates unique spaces and designs bold furniture
Maria Pergay, Alan Watts, and William Eggleston are all artists and thinkers who have influenced generations of designers, including Matt McKay, Parsons AAS Interior Design ’12. In addition to these legendary creators, McKay also draws inspiration from nature, landscape, and travel.
“Just taking the time to hike or walk along the beach can provide a wealth of inspiration,” says McKay. “I travel to absorb different cultures, art, design and food. It all stimulates the senses and gives me a sense of adventure and ideas.”
McKay, an accomplished interior designer who has been featured in Architectural Digest, Surface, Remodelista, and more, also recently launched a furniture collection that includes chairs, tables, and other eclectic seating. His company focuses on residential projects and is currently working on residential developments in New York, the Hamptons, Connecticut, Miami, and Austin.

McKay said of his decision to open his own practice: I decided it was time to dream bigger and challenge myself to grow. ”
During his time at Parsons, McKay focused on the technical knowledge necessary to excel in a work environment, creating a solid foundation from which to begin his career. He was also exposed to famous interior designers and other innovative creators, who inspired him and influenced his educational curriculum.
His advice to aspiring designers is to “collect something, find something you’re passionate about, constantly research it, and acquire based on that passion.”
Next, McKay is working on several projects in the Hamptons, building a house in Austin, Texas, and has various endeavors in New York City.
