This December marks 16 years since my daughter and I went to the B-K Theater to see the first Tehachapi Community Theater production of “Oliver!” there. I remember being impressed by the historic Art Deco interior, the welcoming spirit of the ushers, and how close the stage was to every seat in the audience.
For those who have never been to a small theater before, it will be a unique experience. Every seat in the house feels like a seat you would pay a fortune to buy in a big theater. I thought I could see the tears in my eyes as the actress belted out “As Long as He Needs Me,” and I didn’t even get close to the front row (don’t worry, The stage lights are so bright that the performers can’t see them (you can really see people in the audience).
We were fascinated by the music, dance, and drama. We had just moved to Tehachapi and were still exploring everything the small town had to offer. What a wonderful gem we discovered! Now, 16 years later, Oliver! i’m back! The Tehachapi Community Theater Association (formerly Tehachapi Community Theater) has been rehearsing since mid-July to put on a hit show. And, as hard as it would have been to believe 16 years ago, I’m also in the cast.
We have songs that you love so much that once you start singing, you won’t be able to stop! Hmm, papa! We have dances that will make you feel light on your feet even when you are sitting! Sashay and spin! And we have stories that will tug at your heartstrings and make you ponder the strength of innocent people in the face of adversity.
It will be an unforgettable experience. It could even lead to something you never expected. Come celebrate your anniversary with us. The second installment of “Oliver!” has come full circle.
