book sales
Friends of the Redwood Libraries will hold a fall book sale at the Eureka Library, 1313 Third St., Eureka, on Nov. 1 and 2 from 10 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.
Friday Sale (November 1st) is exclusive to members and memberships are available in-store. Saturday Sale (November 2nd) is open to everyone.
Over the past few months, Friends has received donations of thousands of gently used books, most of which will be sold for the first time. The books available also include many cookbooks, history, mysteries, and children’s books. CDs and DVDs will also be available for purchase. Small bills are welcome, and credit cards are accepted for purchases of $5 or more. Proceeds from sales will benefit the entire Humboldt County Library System.
grunge pancake
The pancake breakfast will be served at Freshwater Grange, 48 Grange Road, Freshwater, from 8am to 11am on November 3.
The menu includes buttermilk or whole-wheat pancakes, ham, sausage, scrambled eggs, apple compote, orange juice, tea, and French roast coffee. Top the eggs with homemade salsa and cheese. The cost is $10 for adults and $7 for children.
group meditation
Group meditation is scheduled to begin at 3:45pm on November 3 at Freshwater Grange, 48 Grange Road, Freshwater.
This gathering is designed to support health, mind-body balance, reduce stress, and embrace community, and is led by certified holistic massage therapists and Us/Holy Fire Reiki instructors. Doors open at 3:30 p.m.
craft fair
The “Holiday Craft Fair” will be held Nov. 9 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Humboldt Grange No. 501, 5845 Humboldt Hill Road, Eureka. The kitchen is open for lunch.
We are still recruiting crafters for this event. Indoor table space is $25 including an 8-foot table and chairs. Fees must be paid in advance by cash, check, or money order made payable to Humboldt Grange #501. For more information, please visit https://www.facebook.com/humboldt.grange/.
Preparations will take place on November 8th from 2pm to 5pm and November 9th from 7:30am to 9am.
bunko game
The Eureka Emblem Club will hold an afternoon fundraiser with bunko, snacks and prizes on Nov. 10 from 1 to 3 p.m. at 445 Herrick Avenue in Eureka.

About masks
The Humboldt Literacy Project and the Humboldt County Library are hosting a special free event for children and families in Eureka and the Eel River Valley.
Each program will be led by Dell’Arte alumnus Sean Lang and will focus on masks and mask making. Participants will also have the opportunity to make their own masks, and through play everyone will discover what character each mask represents. Each person will take home their own free book.
Since 1981, the Humboldt Literacy Project has provided free and confidential English tutoring, including programs for native English speakers, English as a second language, and family literacy. For more information about this event, call 707-269-1910 or visit www.humlib.org.

museum event
In partnership with KEET-TV, the Redwood Discovery Museum invites families to “Da Vinci’s Amazing Machines: A Hands-on Exploration” on Nov. 16 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. This event is in celebration of the upcoming Ken Burns documentary. “Leonardo da Vinci” will premiere on KEET PBS on November 18th and 19th at 8 p.m.
This free, interactive event offers children the opportunity to step into the world of Leonardo da Vinci, a talented artist, inventor, scientist, and avid observer of nature. Attendees will be able to explore some of da Vinci’s most original designs, including the aerial screw, parachute, and bird flight device.
Through creative hands-on activities, children will design and build their own parachutes, test bridge structures with Da Vinci’s Bridge, explore a mock human torso, and experiment with different machines .
