The Lexington-Fayette County Health Department is reminding residents of the city’s Andover Hills area to keep their pets vaccinated against rabies after reports of a rabid skunk in the area.
The report was submitted to the UK Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory last week. In response, your local health department recommends checking with your veterinarian or clinic to make sure your pet’s vaccinations are up to date.
Luke Mathis, the department’s environmental health supervisor, said the disease could also affect humans.
“Animals and even humans can become infected if they are bitten by a rabid animal, but the rabies vaccine eliminates most of that concern for people,” Mattis said.
Mathis says to stay away from animals that may have rabies.
“Do not come in contact with wildlife. Do not handle or capture skunks, bats, raccoons, anything,” Mathis said.
Animals showing signs of rabies should be reported to Animal Control.
