NEW YORK — Forbes Travel Guide announced Tuesday the winners of its inaugural Luxury Air Travel Awards. As a result, New York City was chosen as America’s best airport.
LaGuardia Airport received this honor after undergoing a historic $8 billion renovation that transformed it from once the worst airport in the nation to now one of the best.
“This award from Forbes Travel Guide recognizes LaGuardia as the nation’s best airport and recognizes all the efforts the Port Authority and our partners have invested in reimagining what LaGuardia can be. It’s a testament to our resources,” Port Authority Chairman Kevin Orr said. Mr. Toole said in a statement. “Today, we are no longer imagining what an airport could look like. We are realizing our goal of creating world-class airports across the region.”
Restoration began in 2016 under former Governor Andrew Cuomo. In a statement Tuesday, he said:
“From worst to first, this new and well-deserved recognition is a testament to the hard-working men and women of my administration who oversaw this $8 billion transformation under difficult circumstances and in record time and on budget. .
“It wasn’t that long ago that President Biden called LaGuardia a ‘Third World country.’ This rapid transformation has shown the world that with capable government, accomplishments and vision can be realized. .
“This is also a testament to the infrastructure that the people of our great state of New York deserve. Together, we made the impossible possible.”
Forbes also said LaGuardia has the best new airport terminal.
LaGuardia Airport was not the only airport in the tri-state area to receive recognition. Delta One Lounge at John F. Kennedy International Airport has been named Best U.S. Airline Lounge.
According to Forbes, 5,000 luxury travel professionals have joined the list.
