Many of you may not know this, but the Mr. Olympian competition was held last weekend. For your information, this is the biggest event of the year for all professional bodybuilders and fitness competitors. The winner will be recognized as the best in the entire world.
One of the benefits of winning is that nutritional sponsors and supporters come knocking on your door with significant funding. Olympian couples can easily earn millions of dollars a year.
Interestingly, when Tina and I were competitive for a few years, we earned our pro cards. This means we were the best in our category. But why didn’t our sponsors come looking for us? Because we were too old.
I continued to compete professionally until my late 50s, while Tina was in her late 40s. All of our competitors were 30 years younger. Tina competed against five countries and came in second place. I was fifth and the crowd went wild for both of us because of our age, but we were still too old to be marketable. Don’t get me wrong, we were nowhere near Mr. Olympian’s level.
What Nike and other brands don’t understand is that older people have more expendable income than younger people. Think about it. Older people are paying off their homes and cars and retiring, and their children are becoming financially independent.
As you know, 90% of Ageless Muscle’s customers are in their 60s and 70s. There are many people in their 80s and 90s. You’d be surprised how many seniors wear Lululemon-branded workout apparel. They are all wearing cool sports workout clothes.
So why don’t famous brands market to older people? It’s because the people in charge are young and don’t understand what older generations think is cool.
Getting older doesn’t mean throwing in the towel. I really enjoy spending time with each of my elderly clients. They’re hilarious, have great stories, and are some of the coolest people you’ll ever meet.
Can you imagine how much more revenue a branding company could bring in if it included targeting the cool demographic, the seniors?
So do you still love being stylish? Do I really care what other people think about me? I stopped worrying about what people would think of me years ago. Get out there, enjoy the world, and be as cool as you want.
Until next week, keep moving and staying cool.
