Atalanta manager Gian Piero Gasperini has revealed that Ademola Lookman’s recent stint with the Nigeria national team had an impact on the player’s fitness level during the 2-0 win over Venice.PUNCH Sports Extra ‘ reported.
After Saturday’s Serie A match, Gasperini explained that Lookman was substituted because he was unable to contribute defensively and was subsequently unable to play for the team.
“He (Lookman) was struggling to come back and help the defense, so he wasn’t playing for the team. Venice is growing and I needed to bring the team together more.” Gasperini told DAZN.
The Italian tactician’s comments shed light on the challenges faced by players returning from international duty, especially those who took part in the African qualifiers. Lookman was part of the Nigeria squad that had a harrowing experience in the recent African Cup of Nations qualifier against Libya.
The Super Eagles were stranded at Libya’s Al Abraq International Airport for more than 12 hours after their charter flight had an unexpected diversion. In the ordeal, which captain William Troost-Ekong described as “disgraceful”, the team was denied access to food, drink and communication facilities.
Despite the difficult circumstances, Atalanta’s lookman started against Venice, but was unable to maintain his usual high standards. The 26-year-old hit the crossbar in one of La Dea’s several big chances and came close to scoring.
The Nigerian forward has been a key player for the Bergamo-based club, scoring three goals and providing three assists in all competitions this season.
His performances have garnered attention and Lookman was recently named the only African candidate for the 2024 Ballon d’Or.
However, recent reports suggest that Lookman could be on the move in the January transfer window. ESPN reported that several Premier League clubs have shown strong interest in the forward, who could be available for as little as €25 million despite being under contract with Atalanta until 2026.
Gasperini’s comments regarding Lookman’s fitness came as Atalanta prepare for Wednesday’s Champions League game against Celtic. The manager will be hoping the Nigeria international returns to form and fitness quickly as the team aims to progress in domestic and European competitions.
As the January transfer window approaches, all eyes will be on Lookman’s performance and potential next move. For now, the focus remains on his recovery and contribution to Atalanta’s campaign. They currently sit sixth in Serie A, level on points with Lazio and Udinese.
