Marin County authorities arrested a woman Wednesday on suspicion of stealing more than $80,000 in jewelry and gift cards from a Mill Valley resident she employed as an interior designer and home organizer.
According to the Marin County Sheriff’s Office, deputies were dispatched to investigate a theft that occurred in the Strawberry area of Mill Valley last Thursday. The victim told police that he hired a woman named Cezary Venema to steal more than $80,000 in jewelry and gift cards from his home over a period of about five months.
After the victim was discovered, she confronted the suspect about the theft. Venama admitted spending about $5,000 on gift cards and taking another gift card worth $200, but denied taking any jewelry from her home.
Marin County Sheriff’s Office detectives executed a search warrant for Venama’s home in Novato and her car. On Wednesday morning, detectives executed a search warrant and discovered jewelry stolen from the victim and additional gift cards, as well as items purchased with the stolen gift cards, in Venama’s car and home. During interrogation, the suspect admitted to stealing the items from the victim.
Benema was booked into the Marin County Jail on charges of possession of stolen property, robbery, embezzlement over $400, and grand larceny. After being charged $50,000 bail, Venema immediately posted it. During the investigation, Benema told detectives that she worked as an interior designer for other Marin County residents. The Marin County Sheriff’s Office is asking anyone who believes they may be a victim to contact Detective Hickey at s_hickey@marinsheriff.org.
