INT. your screen now.
On Tuesday, Hulu released a trailer for the upcoming limited series “Interior Chinatown,” an imaginative, genre-bending comedy from creator Charles Yu and director Taika Waititi.
The series follows Willis Wu (Jimmy O. Yang, “Silicon Valley”), a background character trapped “Groundhog Day” style inside a police procedural called “Black & White.” . Relegated to the background, Willis does on-screen work and waits for his turn, dreaming of a world beyond Chinatown and aspiring to be the star of his own story. When Willis accidentally becomes a witness to a crime, he begins to unravel Chinatown’s web of crime, while also discovering his family’s hidden history and what it’s like to be in the spotlight. . In the trailer, he fights, befriends a beautiful detective named Lana Lee (Chloe Bennet, “Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.”), and gives off an overall Charlie Kaufman-esque vibe. It’s a world where kung fu could break out at any moment.
“Interior Chinatown” is based on Yu’s novel of the same name, which won the National Book Award in 2020, and was adapted by Yu. He serves as showrunner and executive producer with Waititi directing the pilot, bringing the quirky style he brought to Reservation Dogs and What We Do in the Shadows. . (“Interior Chinatown” seems to be somewhere between the dramatics of “Rez Dogs” and the ridiculousness of “WWDITS.”) The cast also includes Ronnie Chen, Lisa Gilroy, Sullivan Jones, Archie Kao, and Diana.・Contains phosphorus.
“Interior Chinatown” will premiere all 10 episodes on Hulu on November 19th.
