Interior Chinatown is based on Charles Yu’s award-winning book of the same name. The show follows the story of Willis Wu, a background character trapped in a police procedural called “Black & White.” Relegated to the background, Willis juggles on-screen work and waiter duties, dreaming of a world beyond Chinatown and aspiring to be the star of his own story. When Willis inadvertently becomes a witness to a crime, he begins to unravel Chinatown’s web of crime while discovering his family’s hidden history and what it feels like to be in the spotlight. Willis does not perceive himself as the main character of his life. He’s just a regular Asian guy. Sometimes he’s a Background Oriental, Making a Weird Face, or even a Son of Shame, but he’s always relegated to a prop. Still, every day he leaves his small room at the SRO in Chinatown and enters the Golden Palace Restaurant. The procedural police drama “Black and White” is permanently produced there. Again, he’s a bit of a playboy, but he dreams of becoming a kung fu guy. Kung Fu Guy is the most respected position that can be achieved by anyone who looks like you. Or is it?

Think of “Interior Chinatown” as a kind of post-“Everywhere All At Once” TV series. The rest of the cast includes Sullivan Jones, Lisa Gilroy, Diana Lin, Archie Kao, and Tzi Ma. This will be Chloe Bennet’s first major role since her long stint on Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., but it’s a really good Asian American actor who hasn’t been cast as much as she should have been. It shows that it is not. “Interior Chinatown” will premiere on Hulu in November. Until then, please read the original document thoroughly.
