Election Day is just a few weeks away and excitement is building. Not only to find out who will be the next president of the United States, but also to put an end to the barrage of political spam texts.
A call-blocking service called Robokiller analyzed the 2022 midterm election season and found that Americans received 15 billion political text messages and 384 million political calls in 2022. Robokillers believe that political texting is now the default election strategy for politicians and campaigners.
According to the FCC, campaign calls and text messages are exempt from the requirements of the National Do Not Call Registry. However, the Telephone Consumer Protection Act (TCPA) includes certain rules that consumers must follow.
The FCC asks that if you receive an unsolicited text, you should report the sender by forwarding the text to 7726 (or “spam”).
Campaigns must also honor opt-out requests when users reply “STOP.”
If you believe you have received a political robocall or text message that does not comply with FCC rules, you can file an informal complaint with the FCC at fcc.gov/complaints.
