As Halloween approaches, many pet parents are thinking about dressing up their favorite dog or cat and taking them “trick-or-treating.” While it can be a fun experience, things can be quite scary and even potentially dangerous for your pet unless you take certain precautions.
Strange sounds, loud noises, and the ghouls and goblins your pet encounters can be frightening for your pet. Here are some tips to keep your pet comfortable and safe this Halloween.
Costume:
• Make sure your pet’s costume is comfortable and does not restrict movement.
• Avoid costumes with loose items that can be bitten off and cause choking.
• Add reflective tape or material to the costume to make your pet more visible in the dark.
Safety:
• Make sure your pet is microchipped before leaving the house.
• Keep all candy away from your pet and carry pet treats with you for your pet to eat.
• Confine your pet in a safe place away from scary sounds and frequent visitors.
Potentially hazardous foods:
• Keep all chocolate out of reach.
• Do not feed your pet raisins as they can cause kidney failure.
• Avoid allowing your pet to eat anything containing xylitol, a sugar substitute.
Follow these tips to have a spooky Halloween with your pet. Don’t forget about pets in shelters. San Marcos Regional Animal Shelter is home to many animals, but it’s also a scary place, waiting for families to give them a fun experience. The SMRAS Implementation Office is open Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday from 12:00 to 7:00 p.m. and Saturday from 12:00 to 5:00 p.m. The primary location is at 750 River Rd. SMRAS will also be hosting a $5 microchip event for pet owners on November 1, 2024 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. No reservations required. Just bring your pet in a carrier or on a leash. All Hays County residents are welcome to participate. Microchipping gives your pet the best chance of being returned if it goes missing. Keep your pet safe for just $5.
