Guerrilla Games seems to have dashed expectations for a new Killzone game in an interview talking about the Horizon franchise. Studio veteran Roy Postma revealed to the Washington Post that Horizon was born out of the team’s desire to move forward from Killzone and create an IP that was the polar opposite of the dark shooter.
A new Killzone game might just be a pipe dream
According to Postma, Guerrilla Games felt the need to “update the palette” and that the Killzone franchise was “done” at the time Horizon was conceived. “It was the opposite of Killzone by choice,” he said (thanks to ResetEra).
Postma went on to explain that Guerrilla believes Horizon resonates with more players than Killzone and targets a broader audience. “I think the themes this story and its characters represent, whether it’s finding a friend’s family or finding your place in the world, are relatable to people of all ages,” Postma added.
From a commercial perspective, Horizon is certainly more popular than Killzone, as evidenced by its sales figures. With Lego games, remasters, and multiplayer titles on the way, Guerrilla doesn’t seem to have any plans to stop the series.
The Killzone series spanned nine years, from 2004 to 2013. Next February, Horizon will celebrate its 8th anniversary.
